Japanning was a method of painting that coated the bases of many of the irons of the time

it would be best on gas or electric coil

The original piece was "japaned" back in 1900 which was a protective black coating

It is listed as Priced to Sell because it was used in a high heat environment over a wood fire that created the sulfur pitting above the logo
