The fan paper is painstakingly coated with layers of "kakishibu" persimmon tannin, which is a natural coating that has been used the Heian period (794 1185). Its elegant luster deepens as it is used. The bamboo shaft is decorated with a checkered pattern, which is said to signify eternity,
